Ablic Inc. has claimed the industry’s first series of high-withstand-voltage battery monitoring ICs for automotive applications with supply-voltage-divided-output functionality. The devices provide three monitoring function, including overvoltage and undervoltage, which contribute to increased functional safety.

The S-191L/N automotive battery monitoring ICs are used to monitor voltage in an electronic control unit (ECU) with a supply voltage divided output. The device divides high voltage into low voltage to output a voltage that can be directly input to an A/D converter, said Ablic.

Automotive battery monitoring ICs increase functional safetyThe battery monitoring ICs, housed in a small 2 × 3 × 0.5-mm package, include a circuit for controlling the supply voltage divided output by turning it on and off to reduce standby current. This reduces the number of external parts and footprint, as well as lowers the impact of manufacturing variations of the external parts on monitoring accuracy, said Ablic, which contributes to reduced failure rates and better functional safety by ensuring high-accuracy voltage monitoring.

In addition, the devices offer greater safety by providing low-voltage monitoring, which is often caused by failure of the ECU and overvoltage that can damage the ECU, said the company.

The SENSE pin that inputs the monitoring voltage into the S-191L/N Series offers a wide input voltage range of -30 V to 45 V. This capability enables it to handle overvoltage tests or tests simulating reverse connections, which makes the devices suited for monitoring high voltage supplied to an ECU by a battery or other power source.

The devices also offer ultra-low-power consumption of 0.9 µA typical. The operating temperature range is -40°C to 125°C.

The S-191L/N Series has passed the three temperature test (low, normal, and high temperature) and meets AEC-Q100 standards for automotive ICs. It is also Production Part Approval Process-capable.
