NetLogic Microsystems, a global leader in providing high-performance smart semiconductor solutions for next-generation Internet networks, announced the launch of the innovative XLP8128S multi-core communications processor solution. The solution integrates 128 nxCPUs and more than 160 programmable processing engines to provide unprecedented performance for next-generation 3G/4G mobile wireless infrastructure, enterprise, storage, security, metro Ethernet, edge and core infrastructure network applications 160Gb per second throughput and 240 million packets per second (240 Mpps) smart application performance.
This new XLP8128S multi-core processor solution integrates the breakthrough XLP processor architecture to deliver unmatched processing performance and scalability to 128 nxCPUs, each running at up to 2.0 GHz, and is based on the best-in-class Good superscalar engine and out-of-order execution capabilities that merge data plane and control plane processing. The 128 nxCPUs provide full cache and memory coherency to the high-speed Inter-Chip Coherency Interface (ICI), allowing software applications to run seamlessly on symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) or asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) mode. The unique combination of superior processor cores and scalability from 1 to 128 nxCPUs can deliver over 240 Mp/s of intelligent application processing performance, making it the ideal choice for the industry’s Layer 4-7 intelligent networking, The highest performance multi-core communications processor for service and application processing.
Linley Gwennap, principal analyst at The Linley Group, said: “With its third-generation multicore processors, NetLogic Microsystems is increasing the Performance threshold. No competing product even comes close to this level of performance. XLP processors offer many architectural advantages for improved performance, scalability and power efficiency.”
“We can scale to 128 nxCPUs to deliver 160Gb/s throughput and over 240Mp/s while maintaining full cache and memory coherency,” said Behrooz Abdi, executive vice president and general manager at NetLogic Microsystems. Application performance, a capability that is unprecedented in the industry and provides our customers with a new class of devices. We are excited to continue to lead technological innovation in next-generation networking and communications infrastructure, security and storage application multiprocessing excited. “
The XLP8128S solution features NetLogic Microsystems’ high-speed, low-latency Enhanced Fast Messaging Network™, which enables efficient, high-bandwidth communication between 128 nxCPUs and supports billions of over-the-air message and packet descriptors between all on-chip components. Complementing the 128 nxCPUs, the XLP8128S solution provides more than 160 fully autonomous processing engines to independently and completely offload specific network functions from the nxCPUs, including:
- 160 Gb/s fully autonomous security acceleration engine supporting networking, wireless and storage encryption/decryption and authentication protocols
- 160 Gb/s network acceleration engine for ingress/egress packet parsing and management
- 512 Gb per second RAID-5/RAID-6 acceleration
- 40 Gb per second compression/decompression
- Packet sorting
- Storage deduplication acceleration
- TCP segmentation offload
- IEEE 1588 hardware timestamp
The XLP8128S multi-core solution provides a three-tier cache architecture with more than 50 Mbytes of fully coherent on-chip cache, providing extremely high-speed on-board memory bandwidth of 40 Tb/s. In addition, the XLP8128S solution includes 16 72-bit DDR3 interconnect channels, resulting in more than 1600 Gb/s of total off-chip memory bandwidth, which is four times the DRAM bandwidth of recently announced competing solutions. The combination of 128 nxCPUs with quad-issue and superior memory subsystem architecture makes this device ideal for data plane applications, which are inherently sensitive to memory latency, and control plane applications, which require best-in-class processing performance.
In addition, the XLP8128S multi-core processor solution also integrates numerous high-speed networking interfaces, including Interlaken, XAUI, SGMII, PCI-Express, USB2.0, and NetLogic Microsystems’ high-bandwidth Inter-Chip Coherence Interface (ICI) for full software transparency Provides seamless chip-to-chip cache and memory coherency. The XLP8128S solution is fabricated using TSMC’s advanced 40nm process technology. NetLogic Microsystems’ family of multicore processors is supported by a comprehensive software development kit (SDK) containing reference and production-ready software components, thus enabling customers to accelerate time-to-market.
The XLP8128S solution will be sampling in the third quarter of 2010, and NetLogic Microsystems is currently contacting early adopters of this technology.
