What is the meaning of first-level discipline?

As early as 2015, six departments including the Ministry of Education jointly researched and decided to support a group of colleges and universities to build demonstration microelectronics colleges or prepare to build demonstration microelectronics colleges to accelerate the cultivation of engineering talents urgently needed by the integrated circuit industry.

At present, there are 28 national demonstration microelectronics colleges. Due to the particularity of the industry, the threshold of integrated circuit technology is relatively high, spanning multiple disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, and chemical engineering, and it is inseparable from the accumulation of practice from design to production.

What is the lack of integrated circuit talent training?

Although the government, enterprises and academia have paid more and more attention to the integrated circuit industry in recent years, the phenomenon of talent gap still exists.

According to the “White Paper on Talents in China’s Integrated Circuit Industry (2019-2020 Edition)” (hereinafter referred to as the “White Paper”), as of the end of 2019, the number of personnel directly engaged in the integrated circuit industry in my country was about 511,900, an increase of 50,900 over the previous year. Among them, the number of employees in the design industry, manufacturing industry and packaging and testing industry is 181,200, 171,900 and 158,800 respectively.

According to the current industrial development trend and the corresponding per capita output value, the “White Paper” predicts that the demand for talents in the entire industry will reach about 744,500 around 2022, including 270,400 in the design industry, 264,300 in the manufacturing industry, and 20.98 in packaging and testing. million people. In terms of employment in colleges and universities, the “White Paper” shows that doctoral graduates from exemplary microelectronics colleges are more willing to work in colleges or research institutes, and the proportion of undergraduates who are directly employed is much lower than that of master/doctoral graduates. In general, the situation of talent shortage is still severe, and the talent structure is obviously unbalanced.
