Adaptive control algorithms ensure best-in-class acoustic and torque performance

Tysondello, Belgium, October 9, 2020 – Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, announces the ICMLX90412, a new single-coil fan and pump driver with a peak drive capability of 2.2A. The MLX90412 combines high performance and low noise operation, making it suitable for a variety of home appliances and industrial applications. Suitable for applications driving loads up to 35W, this product complements the previously released MLX90411, adding high power options to the family.

The operating voltage range of the MLX90412 is 3.5V to 32V and it can withstand transient voltages up to 40V. Therefore, it is not only ideal for devices with 12V and 24V power supplies, but also for portable applications with up to seven lithium-ion batteries (~29V). Suitable home appliance applications include drain and sump pumps for washing machines and dishwashers; fans, blowers, and cross-flow blowers in air conditioning units, table fans, and pedestal fans; and a variety of lithium battery-based applications, including robotic sweepers and robotic lawn mowers machine.

The device also offers a variety of motor commutation options to meet user needs for high torque, low noise, and low vibration. A patented adaptive control algorithm ensures maximum efficiency with minimum reverse current over the entire speed range, independent of motor inductance or applied lead angle.

The device is available with open-loop and closed-loop speed control with multiple dynamic (PI) settings and electrical speeds up to 45,000e-rpm. Closed loop speed control reduces speed tolerance to +/-3%. Combined with low noise current trim, the MLX90412 offers unprecedented noise performance in its price range, providing a cost-effective alternative to expensive three-phase solutions in many challenging applications. Additionally, in pump applications, the closed loop can also be used as no-load or dry-run protection, preventing the pump from running at excessive speeds while preventing high noise and early failures.

The MLX90412 features a variety of integrated protection functions, including stall protection, overtemperature protection, overvoltage protection, short circuit protection, and current limiting, as well as built-in power clamps. Like the MLX90411, the MLX90412 is programmable via the I2C interface, and all options are configurable via the on-chip EEPROM. The MLX90412 is available in a 3mmx3mmDFN10 package.
